About Panchapatchi Sastra
Panchapatchi Sastra — also written Panchapatchi Sastram or Panchapakshi Shastra — is an ancient Tamil astrology system that gives daily predictions and rasi palan for the 27 nakshatras (birth stars) using five birds. The Panchapatchi Sastra app brings this knowledge to you each day on web, Android and iOS, in Tamil, English, Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Malay.
What is Panchapatchi?
Many thousands of years ago, the sage Kakapujandar revealed an astrological science of the life-states of living beings — and that is the Pancha Patchi Sastra. “Pancha” means five and “Patchi” means bird. Accordingly, the practice of giving predictions for the 27 nakshatras using five birds is what we call the Panchapatchi Sastra.
Who was Kakapujandar?
Kakapujandar (காகபுஜண்டர்) — also written Kagapujandar, Kagapujagandar, Kaaka Bhujandar, Kagapuja or Kagam — was the ancient Tamil Siddhar (sage) who devised and revealed the Panchapatchi five-bird system. According to his teaching, the 24 hours of a day are divided into ten Jamams — five in the daytime and five at night — each lasting about 2 hours and 24 minutes. He described, in the Tamil of his day, how each of the five birds behaves through these ten Jamams.
Who is Rishabanandhar Swamigal?
Rishabanandhar Swamigal (also Rishabananthar, Rishabanadhar or Rishab) — in full, Thambiran Sivavakkiya Rishabanandhar Swamigal — is the Tamil saint who preserves, teaches and applies Kakapujandar's Panchapatchi system today. This app shares his daily readings so that anyone can follow the tradition.
The five birds and their nakshatras
Each of the 27 nakshatras (birth stars) is assigned to one of five birds:
| Bird (patchi) | Nakshatras |
|---|---|---|
Jamam and the five activities
Within each Jamam, your own bird (Thanpatchi) performs one of five activities. The activity tells you how auspicious that period is for starting something new:
| Activity | Meaning | Success |
|---|---|---|
| Arasu (அரசு) | Rule | 100% |
| Oon (ஊண்) | Eat | ~75% |
| Nadai (நடை) | Walk | ~50% |
| Thuyil (துயில்) | Sleep | ~25% |
| Saavu (சாவு) | Death | 0% |
When your bird is in Arasu (Rule), auspicious new beginnings — a new job, a bank account, travel, weddings, buying a vehicle, admitting a child to school and so on — are said to succeed fully. During Saavu (Death), it is advised not to begin anything important.
